Fallen Sun

Project Overview

Fallen Sun is an interactive, visual novel told through PowerPoint. Built in Google slides, using 17 slide cards and over 20 unique assets.

Fallen Sun follows the story of a young woman named Kaja, (pronounced “kai-uh”) as she meditates on her past and the questions she has about it...

As you click to navigate through the story, some simple animations will play. For the best experience, please make sure to wait 1-3 seconds before continuing to the next slide.

Lore and Symbolism

Aside from Lady Sakura, all the characters that make appearances are Kaja’s immediate family. Her parents, older sisters, and twin brother.

Throughout the novel, there are significant parallels and imagery comparing Kaja to the sun. From the emblems on her shirt to the golden light that always seems to be shining on her…

Among other things, this represents Kaja’s self-focused nature. How she is convinced the events of history all revolve around her. And how slowly we see the sun shining not at all, and as it begins to shine again… we see it shine its light on others around her as well.

The Writing

As I wrote the prose for this work, I aimed to capture the emotions of spiraling doubt. The kind of thoughts that cloud your mind and depress you to the brink of sorrow. As the story progresses, I wanted to encourage readers to reframe their thinking. Bad things happen, but they can be used for good.

The Art

I drew the characters intentionally sharp and vibrant- Kaja herself being the most detailed in the scenes, since they play out as part of her memories. The backgrounds are purposely blurry and faded- even washed out in some places, as the scenes of the past so often tend to be with the passage of time.

Each character also has a unique colour theme representative of their personality, and there are specific relationships illustrated with contrasting and complementary colours.
